Samsung’s $200 billion deal with Broadcom helps make chips more available as US AI companies rush to get the computers they need.

South Korea said it will spend $950 billion on new AI projects with Samsung, SK Group, and US tech companies. This is happening because AI leaders around the world are trying to fix a shortage of faster computer chips needed to run and build better AI systems.
SK Group signed deals worth $750 billion, including a partnership between SK Hynix and Nvidia worth more than $500 billion, as told by South Korea’s presidential office after an AI meeting led by President Lee Jae Myung in San Francisco.
Samsung Electronics said it signed a deal with Broadcom worth up to $200 billion for memory chips, chip-making services, and advanced packaging.
These deals show US AI companies trying to secure supplies because demand for chips and computer parts is bigger than supply, pushing tech companies to work more closely with South Korea’s top chip and memory makers.
At the summit, Lee said South Korea will lead the way into a new AI era with global tech companies, sharing its ‘active AI system’ to grow the world market for AI tools for businesses and people.
He announced a ‘San Francisco AI Declaration’ that shows South Korea’s plans to work with the United States on technology.
“I want to show a plan for the future of AI and ask countries to work together to make it happen,” Lee said.
Lee met with the bosses of Nvidia, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Broadcom before the meeting.
The leaders of Samsung, SK Group, Hyundai Motor, and Naver also came to the meeting.
Nvidia and South Korea’s SK Group announced a new AI project worth $500 billion. It includes big AI data centers and new memory tech.
They will work with SK Hynix to get new memory for Nvidia and make fast memory for AI training, AI agents, and physical AI uses.
SK Telecom will build a 2-gigawatt data center using Vera Rubin chips and SK Hynix’s HBM4 memory. The data center will start running in 2027.
Samsung Electronics says it will team up with Broadcom to build a new AI helper using Samsung’s high-speed memory tech, and will offer very small chip-making services and advanced packaging methods.
‘I want more’
SK Chairman Chey said AI customers wanted much more memory than expected, based on recent talks with Nvidia, Anthropic, OpenAI, and Broadcom.
Chey said Nvidia’s memory needs for the next five years might soon be even higher.
He added, ‘I wouldn’t be surprised if, next time I see Huang, he says those numbers were too low and asks for more.’
He said Broadcom’s boss Hock Tan also told him the company’s need for memory chips would probably be more than what they can get. And that Anthropic often asks about future chip availability as it moves from making AI models to building computer power.
Chey said OpenAI would need a huge amount of computer power and had pushed SK to give chips directly to the ChatGPT maker.
The SK Group leader also said Anthropic was building its own “computer power” without giving details, possibly talking about a plan reported by Reuters that the AI lab is looking into the possibility.
An Anthropic spokesperson said the company is always looking at different choices and using many types of chips to have a varied way of computing.
Anthropic CEO Amodei did not say anything about the reported plan, but said the company made deals with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to supply chips, without giving more details.
In May, Anthropic got money at a value of $965 billion after the investment, and named Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Micron as partners whose technologies are very important for making memory, storage, and logic chips.
President Lee will go to a Silicon Valley meeting on Saturday. The meeting is between South Korea’s National Pension Service, the world’s third-largest pension fund, and US venture capital firms. The goal is to get them to invest in South Korean start-ups.
These events show Lee’s push to bring in global money and tech partners as he works on one of the world’s biggest government-backed AI projects.
Last month, South Korea, with help from Samsung and SK Hynix, started government-supported projects to build chip-making hubs, physical AI systems, and AI data centers. This is part of a big industrial plan costing over $576 billion.
